Praise in the Gates: Celebrating Doers of the Work

Ezra International

Helping rescue Jewish people from the pitiful conditions of the former Soviet Union is the ministry of Ezra International, a ministry based in Sanford, Florida. Recognizing that anti-Semitism is on the rise around the world and particularly in the Eastern bloc nations, Ezra International’s staff and volunteers see the necessity for Christian intervention to help Jews escape that part of the world and make aliyah to Israel, the land of their forefathers. "We have cried wolf for too many years," Ezra International says. "For several years we have been told that the doors are closing in the former Soviet Union."

According to a rabbi in Russia’s Baltic port of Kaliningrad, "People are being screamed at on the streets, harassed much more than before. I can feel it myself, especially when I walk on Shabbat." Although there are over one hundred nationalities in Russia, only Jews find a racial entry, "Jew," on their passports. Communist Duma representative General Albert Makashov requested "the elimination" of the "Jewish blood suckers," because "the Jews are guilty of Russia’s misery. They drink the blood of the native people." At demonstrations against Yeltzin, outcries such as "Jews Out!" and "Out with Yeltzin’s court Jews!" can be heard. The only person who protested against this anti-Semitism was Galina Starovoitova, and she was assassinated in St. Petersburg.

For Ezra International this is a very practical rescue operation, providing funding and personnel to help Jews who suffer from malnutrition and other problems to emigrate to Israel. Most of the Christian church sat idly by during the Holocaust when six million Jews, including over one million children, were systematically slaughtered. Now is the time for Christians to stand up against anti-Semitism in the former Soviet Union and say, "Never again."
